The main lift station at the wastewater treatment plant in Morgan’s Point, Texas, continuously experienced issues with its three standard clog-free guarantee pumps. The pumps frequently clogged when rainfall reached or exceeded 2 inches. During periods of increased demand, items such as cleaning cloths, 2×4 pieces of timber, plastic bottles, gloves, and wet wipes clogged the pumps. The pumps had to be removed, dismantled, and repaired repeatedly, but since the service company was not always available to provide immediate assistance, users of the lift station faced significant issues.

From 2009 to 2016, Morgan’s Point spent approximately $100,000 on the maintenance and servicing of the three pumps. During this period, 24 service calls were required to disassemble, clean, reassemble, and reset the pumps. Additionally, the pumps were reinstalled at least six times, and two replacement pumps had to be purchased.

Due to excessive downtime and repairs with the standard clog-free guarantee pumps, Morgan’s Point City Manager Brian Schneider contacted the local Vaughan representative to find a solution. In May 2016, Vaughan Company proposed a new SE Series Submersible Chopper Pump, complete with a guide rail system, to address the frequent pump clogging issues. The City of Morgan’s Point accepted Vaughan’s proposal, and the system was installed in just 45 days.

By late July 2016, the city had experienced over 100 inches of rainfall since the Vaughan pumps were installed, without any clogging or other issues. In January 2017, the city inspected the pumps for wear, and according to Mr. Schneider, “the pumps showed no signs of wear and looked brand new.”

During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the wettest tropical storm recorded in U.S. history, the Houston area received over 52 inches of rain. Vaughan pumps operated continuously for 72 hours without any clogging or issues, pumping over 2.5 million gallons of unscreened sewage through the lift station. There was no flooding, and none of the 150 homes served by the lift station experienced sewage backups.

Mr. Schneider stated that he was certain those homes would have been flooded with sewage if the old pumps were still in use. “I wish we had purchased these pumps a year earlier to eliminate the maintenance challenges and costs we faced with the previous pumps. Vaughan pumps have been incredibly reliable since they were installed.”
